Research and Development Unit

Research is an academic function inherent to all higher education institutions. The role of research in expanding the frontiers of knowledge is well recognized in the academic circles. Bohol Island State University (BISU), one with all the SUCs in the country being mandated to generate and disseminate knowledge, commits to take the responsibility and function to conduct research and other scholarly investigations in the disciplines identified as focus areas.

 

BISU has the obligation to put research function at work in order to contribute information and data and to produce innovative technologies useful to local, national, and international programs on sustainable development. As provided by Republic Act 9722, BISU “shall promote research and give primary consideration to integration of research studies for the development of the country and the world”.

 

This Research and Development (R&D) manual is a BISU document that embodies the R & D policies, guidelines, programs, and projects to promote, encourage, and support research activities of the university.

Vision

BISU is a premier S & T University for the formation of world-class and virtuous human resource for sustainable development in Bohol and the country.

Mission

To realize the vision, BISU is committed to provide quality higher education in the arts and sciences as well as in the professional and technological fields, undertake research and development and extension services for the sustainable development of Bohol and the country.

Goals

For BISU to address the needs of the strategic sectors, the University sets the following goals:

  1. Pursue faculty and education excellence;
  2. Strengthen current and develop viable curricular programs that are responsive to the demands of the times both in the industry and the environment;
  3. Promote quality research and produce outputs that respond to the needs of the local, regional and national sectors;
  4. Develop communities through responsive extension programs;
  5. Adopt, and from there innovate, efficient and profitable income generating projects/enterprise for self-sustainability;
  6. Provide adequate state-of-the-art and accessible infrastructure support facilities for quality education; and
  7. Promote efficient and effective good governance supportive of high quality education.

Strategic Areas

The top priority sectors to which BISU has the capability and commitment to effect changes through R&D are the fields of agriculture, forestry, fishery, engineering, education, tourism, paramedics, hospitality management, and information technology. The R&D programs and projects shall revolve in these areas in order to become responsive to the needs of the communities it serves.

Objectives

Anchored on the institution’s Goal Number 2, that is, to plan and implement a focused R&D agenda, BISU shall:

  1. Harness the skills of at least 100% of the R&D staff and faculty-researchers and account their productivity and excellence in research;
  2. Enhance institutional capability in resource generation for funding research projects;
  3. Consult the stakeholders of top and complementary strategic sectors: agriculture, forestry, fishery, tourism, engineering, industrial and information technology, health, sciences, and education for the R&D agenda formulation;
  4. Prepare relevant, marketable and fund-winning R&D proposals;
  5. Conduct an annual in-house review for internal refereeing, presentation and dissemination of research outputs;
  6. Publish regularly in the university scientific journal all the research outputs that passed the R&D in-house review and referees’ evaluation;
  7. Encourage participation of researchers in relevant R&D conferences for presentation and dissemination of research outputs;
  8. Formulate and implement Intellectual Property Right (IPR) policy to provide justice and incentives to the author of an invention or a new creation as well as protect their moral and economic rights;
  9. Monitor and evaluate the utilization of research outputs, their benefits and setbacks as basis for planning.

This Research and Development (R&D) manual is a BISU document that provides the policies, R&D agenda, R&D programs, areas of concerns and guidelines to promote, encourage, and support research activities of the university.
